This summer, The Best Route's My Mobile Market hit the road to bridge the "last mile" food gap in southeastern Pennsylvania. Hosting 5-7 markets and serving around 200 shoppers a week, discover how our farmers market on wheels increased community access to fresh, local produce, and learn about the vital role of food assistance programs in our local food system.

Navigating Seasonal Highs and Lows

Operating a mobile market means adapting to the unexpected. While we enjoyed a robust season with consistent stops across our community, we also navigated a few hurdles.

Early Tech Hurdles: We experienced some point-of-sale technical difficulties early in the season, which temporarily impacted our ability to process and track certain market stops.

Environmental & Holiday Shifts: Unpredictable weather—including a market cancellation due to heavy smoke—and the typical mid-summer holiday slowdown momentarily shifted our momentum.

Remarkable Rebounds: Despite these disruptions, our community showed incredible support. Following the holiday slump, we experienced our strongest wave of community turnout, resulting in peak market activity that carried us beautifully through the rest of the summer.

The Vital Role of Food Assistance

My Mobile Market is deeply committed to equitable access, and this summer proved just how essential benefit programs are to our shoppers. This summer, over one-fifth of our total sales were driven by community members utilizing food assistance benefits.

The Strength of FMNP Partnerships The Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) proved to be an incredibly strong pillar of our operation this year. A major driver of this success was our strategic collaboration with the SHARE Food Program. By showing up onsite exactly when they distributed Senior FMNP checks, we allowed seniors to immediately and conveniently purchase fresh food. Similarly, parking our truck directly outside local WIC clinics ensured families could instantly redeem their WIC FMNP benefits without facing transportation barriers.

The Challenges Facing SNAP Conversely, SNAP/EBT transactions accounted for a much smaller slice of our market economy. Unfortunately, this reflects broader systemic challenges: with recent cuts to funding and reduced overall support, many of our neighbors simply have fewer SNAP dollars available to spend at the market.

Community Favorites: What Was in Your Basket?

From seed to table, our goal is to provide high-quality seasonal food. Looking at our most popular items, it is clear that classic summer produce reigns supreme!

The Top Trio: Yellow Peaches were the undisputed champions of the summer, flying off the truck at nearly every stop. Sweet Corn and Blueberries followed closely behind.

Summer Staples: Shoppers also loaded up their bags with fresh Cucumbers, vibrant Heirloom Tomatoes, Strawberries, and Zucchini.

Flexible Payments: We strive to be economically accessible. Beyond benefit programs, our shoppers utilized a beautifully even mix of traditional cash and modern card/Venmo payments to secure their groceries.

By sourcing from local growers including Frecon Farms, our own shared farm in Gilbertsville, and partners like Trellis for Tomorrow, we are proud to offer a dignified, welcoming shopping experience for everyone.
